Cool old Gyms

Definitely one of the coolest gyms in the country! Check it out if your visiting New Orleans! Built in 1872 it is the second oldest gym in the country next to the New York Athletic Club! Plenty parking and a great environment.

NOAC

Take a step into the New Orleans Athletic Club, and you take a trip back in time. One of the first athletic clubs in the country, NOAC has a steep initiation fee and monthly dues, but if you workout regularly, it is well worth the price, especially since all the classes are free. This club has kept it's historic charm while updating its equipment with countless workout machines equipped with flat-screen TVs. The pool is modeled after the Roman baths...during one of your free 3 trial visits, make sure you take a dive in it!

Poor maintenance and no service

The facility employs no fitness staff. All of the trainers are private contractors so there is no one on staff for fitness questions, advice or instruction on the equipment. This is important to those new to exercise. Because the trainers are independent, there is no continuity; you’ll see the full spectrum from the VERY knowledgeable to the outright dangerous and inept.
The physical facility needs a facelift. The equipment is in various stages of disrepair. The equipment is only wiped down by the occasional courteous member (no staff to do this on a regular basis) and for the most part repairs take forever. The only staff that seems to be employed are the salespeople which may hint as to the priorities of the management. The salespeople are not equipped (or inclined) to help with questions or complaints.
I joined because of location but would not recommend this facility a friend, especially to a novice.

New Orleans Athletic Club is...

This club is amazing! GREAT customer service, a sense of community, and continuity in time are some of the things this club offers. People who are dissatisfied with this club probably stop using it because they lack motivation. I love the yoga program, spin classes, boot camp with Wendell, and the feeling of working out in a mansion. You get free guest passes for friends, and husbands and wives can come for free on the weekend. I love the staff, All of the staff members know me by name and each year they wish me a happy birthday. I feel like I am a part of something. Great place to network and enjoy many amenities. I SWEAR THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE IT. It is my home away from home.

They offer a ton of classes at not extra charge (spinning, yoga, pilates, aqua aerobics, fencing).

Parking is included.

Indoor pool, basketball, raquetball, sauna and steam room, but they also have a bar, salon, barber and library to relax after your workout.

I can't think of a more beautiful place to workout.

They will try to rip you off.

Email from the club:

You can cancel your memberships in two ways. In writing 30 days prior to your anniversary date, or due to relocation. To cancel due to relocation you must provide proof of relocation. Proof can be a utility bill with your name and the new address on it, a copy of a lease / purchase agreement, or military deployment orders. The new address must be at least 60 miles away from the Club, and proof of relocations must be mailed and post marked from the new address. Once proof of relocation is received the applicable $75.00 termination fee is assessed and the membership is then cancelled.

Thanks,
Stacy

So let me get this straight. I don't wish to use your gym anymore after over 2 YEARS OF PAYING MY DUES and because I made this decision after an arbitrary date on the calendar you will force me to pay my dues for an entire year?

Nice customer service. Too bad for you I am opinionated and express my opinions freely and often. I will now try and get everyone I know to leave your gym and join a gym that has flexible hours, helpful staff, a clean facility. I recommend NolaFit on Magazine Street near Jackson. 24/7 hours, incredible machines and space, soon a rock wall. And so far . . . no pricks.

Stay away from the light!

There is absolutely no customer service at this club, whatsoever. You
can't even get a good morning from the staff. The equipment is dirty
and badly maintained. If you are looking to get in shape, do not go
here.

Best place to get H1N1 virus

This is the most unsanitary sports club I have ever seen in my life!
Water in the pool is so bad it stinks and you can see pieces of who
knows what drifting there. Sauna is dirty and rarely works. Staff (in
particular talked to Stacy Falcone) is rude and not professional. They
also charged me some "admin fees” when I said I am leaving. I regret
the day I made the decision to enroll. Absolutely disgusting place!

do not waste your money and time

This is the worst gym in New Orleans!! Toilettes do not flush; trainers
are not friendly unless you hire them for private sessions. Management
is impossible to deal with. Almost all of the cardio equipment is
broken and machines are poorly maintained. Do not waste your time and
money.

The most expensive club in town!

I had been a member of NOAC for more than a decade and had finally had enough. The draconian penalties to leave and/or return are financially brutal, no matter what the circumstances. It got worse after the flood in 2005, when most members were scattered, NOAC began charging everyones account when they (NOAC) were ready to reopen; regardless of whether members were back in New Orleans or not. They had collection agencies after people in Houston, they even harassed the widow of a dead member! After many frustrating dealings with management (Stacey must get a secret thrill reciting the contract rules and saying the word "no"), Bill (the owner) saw the error of his ways and did attempt to mend fences. Of course that will happen when a huge percentage of people who represent $$$ resist.
Bill appears to have good intentions. Unfortunately they come at the expense of the members. The final straw for me: women's locker room renovations. I think renovations are fine, but you need to accommodate the women who use the facilities (and, ahem, PAY for them). Part of the locker room was sectioned off by a tarp. They installed temporary showers (after an outcry) and we women were told to "cover up" when walking through the workmen's pathway to use the sauna/steam area and on the way to the showers. Of course management said that the would do "something" for the "ladies". I guess you could say silence is something.
This had become an unacceptable situation after a month of walking past workmen in a towel, over a muddy carpet. Not to mention the surprise (!) water shutdowns.
This beautiful old club has become below par, and an embarrassment of its former self. There is a beauty in the old world patina of the building, however the rudeness and laziness of the staff, and the "we know better than you" attitude has gotten old too. There are a lot of other gyms in town, all LESS expensive, with newer equipment and better customer service.

The biggest gym I've been to

It's not just a gym,it's a club.

They offer a ton of classes at not extra charge (spinning, yoga, pilates).

Parking is included, indoor pool, basketball, raquetball, sauna and steam room, but they also have a bar, salon, barber and library to relax after your workout.

The initiation fee is high, $250, but you get certificates for a bunch of things when you join (private training session, haircut, private pilates session) and they have a referal program that you can earn free months dues from.

Like the other reviewer said, I can't think of a more beautiful place to workout.
