New Chef is Creative and keeps me coming for more
I recently went to Angus's on a weeknight around maybe 8:30. I hadn't been there since late February or so and WOW what a difference. I loved the food before but now (and apparently the new chef David just got started a few months ago) it's extraordinary.great food, great service
Had an amazing brunch here last weekend and the waiter mentioned a house specialty offered after 8pm of a porterhouse steak for 2 which is served with unlimited house wine. We had friends visiting so decided to go back and give it a try. We had a cocktail at the bar and watched the theater crowd leave. After 8 o'clock the atmosphere of the restaurant really mellows out. We started with a couple of appetizers off their special menu - a crab meat salad with avocado and mango was very fresh and sweet, and the spinach salad with bacon, pears and pecans was a great combination. Then came the porterhouses - they were cooked to perfection and delicious. We have eaten in the best steak houses in the city, and I have to say this is one of the best steaks I have ever had. With the free wine thown in it is definately a great deal. Our friends and I had a wonderful night at Angus. The service was friendly and the food was fantastic. We will definatley go back.Great anytime, even if it's pre-theatre!
So, this place is totally the pre/post threatre hangout of the minute, but worth it anytime. The staff are mostly actors ( so what else is new?), except they are the kind of actors that listen to cool music (more than likely, one of their ipods is playing totally great music), and don't eat/sleep/breathe theatre. Probably, they are also cool from the fact that celebrity are in there everyday, and they are no longer affected by it. I say this, because I almost always have great conversation with my waiter (-ess): Totally cool people. Of course, if it is in the middle of a rush, they wont have the time, but still make an effort. I have been working in the theatre district for four years, and find this one of the only places I can stomach-- both for food and atmosphere. Other places are either too busy with tourists, so the staff think they aren't getting a tip out of "humoring" your conversation, or are too interested in their own "day-jobbiness" to be bothered with personal attention. Are you kidding me?
At first I was wondering if I ate at the same Angus McIndoe Restaruant as these other people. Then it dawned on me. All these reviews read kind of the same..."new chef", "really cool waitstaff", "best at 8pm", "Great mushroom lasagna and steaks". I thought Citysearch was where you could get real reviews from real people, not paid Ads or reviews written by the "really cool waitstaff." I have been to this restaurant twice and both times were disappointing. I was last there a few weeks ago and did in fact go after 8pm. Our reservation was at 8:30. When we got there no one greeted us for several minutes until a man, apparently having dinner at a table, got up to approach us. He seemed bothered that we interupted his meal. We were seated by the bar. One of only 3 tables. Although the waiters seemed to outnumber the customers, we waited forever for service. We finally had to ask someone to take our order. As for the food. I had this famous Veggie lasagna and it was terrible. For one thing, it was barely warm. I should have sent it back but didn't. My fault. My friend got the burger but had to send it back twice to get the right temperature. In the end she gave up. I can tell you, I won't make the same mistake and go to this restaurant again.A Broadway Staple
Split the Porterhouse steak with a buddy of mine post theatre and the meal was outstanding. The atmosphere was really alive, as well. We were able to choose from one of their three floors and settled on the third floor because of the window view and good music. Plus, we got lucky because you get all the free house wine you can drink, with the porterhouse, after 8:00. Check this place out!Wonderful food, services & prices
Went for lunch pre-theatre today and had a wonderful meal. The wild mushroom lasagna is fantastic as is the calamari appetizer. Service was excellent. We'll be going back. Love this place.Worldwide > United States > New York, NY > American Restaurants
