There is a piece called an arch wire that goes from bracket to bracket. This wire applies the correct amount of pressure needed to straighten the teeth. You may also require "elastics" that will keep the brackets attached to the wire. Metal braces take the shortest time period to straighten the teeth. Of course, the metal type will show more than the other types of braces. Ceramic braces are much less apparent than metal braces, but they will take several months longer to get the desired results.
