Sorry for the long story, but I have tried to summarise the key points for the purpose of this review: The reason that I have reviewed this business is because I know of two other customers that had a negative experience with this business, but have not taken it further. I therefore, will be making the stand against this poor service. It took us a long time to cope with the financial struggle caused by Chaplins MOT & Service Centre. At the start of my dealings with Chaplins, I asked the garage to fit a cambelt only. This was in late March, 2010. The head mechanic advised me to buy the timing-belt kit, which he said Chaplins would fit. Chaplins did fit these new parts, but I was not advised to buy an auxiliary/fan belt. I then rebooked my car into Chaplins a few days later after noticing my engine misfiring and not running smoothly. The car was rebooked in at approximately 0900 and by 1230 I had a phone call from Chaplins to say that my car had broken down during a test drive following their investigation. They told me that they had to tow my car back to their garage. I did not economise on the parts I purchased at all. These parts were purchased from a Renault garage, brand new at a cost exceeding £300. The purchase of these brand-new parts was in response to the advice given from the head mechanic at Chaplins who said that they would fit the brand-new parts if I supplied them. The brand-new parts I purchased were a timing kit and a dephaser pulley. These were purchased from a genuine Renault garage (I have all the original documentation and receipts to prove this). There was NO advice for an auxiliary/fan belt to be purchased. For the price of an auxiliary/fan belt, I would have happily purchased one if I had been advised. The parts did not fail, it was the incorrect fitting of the cambelt (by Chaplins) that resulted in cambelt failure. I would not expect any old parts to be covered under guarantee by Chaplins. The parts in question however, were brand-new and I was told by the head mechanic that Chaplins would happily fit these parts if they were brand-new and were purchased from a genuine Renault garage. I did not ignore any of the little advice that I was given as I went out and bought brand-new parts. I did ask the owner if he could fix the faults his garage caused, but he said that I would have to fund the repair at a cost of £1300+. He would not even meet us halfway with the cost. He took no responsibility for his businesses malpractice. I also feel it was unprofessional as it took me two days to get into contact with the owner who would not accept any responsibility right from the start of our conversation. I asked whether the mechanic who worked on my car was qualified. I was personally told by Mr Chaplin that none of his mechanics were qualified. The mechanic that was working on my car was not qualified. If ONLY I didn't listen to the minimal advice I was given by this garage. My car may not have been damaged. The incorrect fitting of BRAND-NEW parts by Chaplins subsequently led to me losing the use of my car. I had to purchase another car. This was only one job to Chaplins, but to a one car family it was a dreadful time. My car went into this garage running and came out a non-runner. From this review I hope to give people an insight into my experience with this business. However, you must make your own decision.
