i don't care what the reviews say-this place is worth it

my boyfriend and i went as a double date with friends to ippudo. i dread waiting for more than 20 minutes anywhere. luckily it was a half hour wait and we were able to have drinks at the bar. they gave us a generously sized booth in this good-looking ramen restaurant. the ramen was silky and absolutely tasty. i don't eat meat, but everyone loved the pork buns. i wouldn't bother much with the appetizers. go straight to the noodles and enjoy! SO YUMMY!

Beautiful, tasty, friendly and overpriced

The first thing that struck me abotu Ippudo was its wonderful decor. A lot of thought, work and a bit of whimsy went into putting this place together. Its staff is extremely courteous and friendly, adding to a wonderful atmosphere that is punctuated by the amazing smells from the kitchen.

As someone trying to watch his diet, there weren't a lot of options other than tofu and salad (with wonderfully done steamed chicken). Everything I had was beautifully prepared, plated and tasted great so the quality of the food is excellent.

My only quibble are the prices. $8 for essentially some field greens, a few slices of radish and a dash of other vegetables and dressing. If you want any additional bits (say chicken) it will cost you $3. That's quite a bit of nick and diming the customer. $12-16 for a bowl of broth and Ramen is also excessive when you can get a good bowl of Pho with double the amount of veggies, noodles and meat in Chinatown two train stops away. I left still hungry, as did one of my fellow diners (and she had the ramen).

In short: wonderful decor, beautiful and tasty food, amazing staff and service but very overpriced.

Yummy noodle soup standy for cold new york nights

I've been here about five times in the last three months. The soup noodles (karakamen spicy with chicken to be specific) was fantastic and consistent every time. I eat out about three times a week in the city, and I find Ippudo to be a reliable, reasonably-priced, and always satisfying meal. Always fills me up, and I'm always drinking every last drop of the soup!

simple and delicious!!

the wait is long on a busy night, but its worth it!! just put your name down and grab a drink at the bar, or head over to st marks and hang out there until its time. we had the ramen, and 2 appetizers, allof which were delicious! the ramen is light and flavorful and the appetizers are portioned well. the price isn't bad either! i have found ramen heaven.

Over-rated and tastes just little above the average

It is so sickening to hear one waitress imitating little boy sound with annoying nasal sound.
Gyoza actually tasted better than average, but Ramens here are just above average and it is so over-rated to think of this restaurant as good. It is not worth the wait to get inside to eat ramen that is just so so.
I see many Chinese and Koreans wanting to eat the piece japanese food, but don't be mistaken. The food here is just average or little above average at best!!! It is not worth the wait on line. Go there on weekdays.
Interior design of this restaurant is awsome!!! as one thing I noticed.

You got to be kidding

What is the fuss about...really...not worth your hard earned money. Noodles and broth (too salty) are ehh.....and the amt of pork they give you is laughable. Berkshire pork....c'mon give me a break...more like Shmuckshire pork....cause that's what we are for paying $13-$15 for ramen noodles....i repeat this is noodles we're talking about...not foie gras or some delicacy....and $8 for pork buns...UNREAL. You can get the real deal pork buns for 70 cents a few train stops south and noodle soups with tons of more meat and veggies. This place is nothing more than a over-hyped noodle joint....and all you folks who write how great this place is....wake up and smell the coffee....suckers.

worst service in new york

i loved ippudo until last week. i went with three friends and when we placed our order the server told us that the refrigerator was broken and that they couldnt serve alcohol. We asked for wine and they said that it was not possible because they had lost their liquor license. While eating we saw other customers being served beer and sake. We asked three different servers and they just kept telling us that they could not serve us and no other explanation. We asked for the manager and he wouldnt come; the waiter said that he doesnt speak english. Finally the manager came (what a bozo by the way) and we were told that they could not serve us because the hostess thought that we were drunk! First, we were not drunk at all (not even tipsy) and second if they thought that we were drunk they should have said so instead of lying to us about broken refrigerators and lost liquor licences. We would have gone somewhere else to have dinner. They ruined our evening and went we got up to leave in the middle of dinner because of their insult, they didnt even bother to take out of the check the food that we had not touched because we were so upset. I have been in new york all my life and never saw such bad service or such a ... manager

BAD SERVICE!....GOOD FOOD!

I really want to give this place a very low rating for its horrible service, but I am giving a 3/5 for the phenomenal ramen they have there! I am not a ramen expert, I don't really know "authentic" asian cuisine but this is by far the best ramen I've had. NO JOKE.

Now the downside---the waitresses reallllly need to learn to be more attentive. Stop taking away my food before I am done, I was working on my soup while conversing with my friend and the waitress took away my bowl without asking me if I was done. WHAT...the hell?

Other than that...great ramen, really.

Believe

Saturday, Jan 09, 2010 (2 of us). We went to Ippudo in Osaka/Umeda just 2 months ago. It was one of our BEST experiences dinning out! Naturally, we wanted to try Ippudo in New York for a comparison as well as satisfying our craving for ramen! Like others, we had to wait for seats. Waited by the bar for 1 hour and 25 minutes, just as the hostess predicted. She was very good and came around to check on us twice. If you do not like people hovering over you, you will not want to wait. There were 'massive' people waiting to taste the famous ramen. We did not mind the crowd and just ordered up some drinks.

Here is a list of what we had:
ZUISEN AWAMORI this is a shochu from Okinawa. Served on the rocks. Smooth. VERY GOOD.
GINGA KOGEN BEER-comes in a blue bottle. It is unfiltered, full of flavors. Reminiscent of beers from Belgium. VERY GOOD.
TAKO WASABI-raw baby octopus was very fresh with just the right amount of fresh wasabi, seasoning and citrus. The flavors come together harmoniously. EXCELLENT.
HIRATA BUNS-these are the famous pork buns. The buns are pre-made like the ones some Chinese restaurants serve Peking Duck with but the pork belly or fatty pork is what makes this dish. Pork melted in your mouth but was a bit too small. VERY GOOD.
DUCK WITH BALSAMIC SAUCE AND YUZU PEPPER-This dish is served cold. Presentation was nice. Many pieces of duck breast were given. Sauce was great. Interesting dish. QUITE GOOD.
SHIROMARU HAKATA CLASSIC RAMEN-this is the original recipe and how ramen should be. The noodles were al dente. Soup was very good. We would prefer the egg a bit under-cooked. We also would like the pork to be sliced thinner, instead of 1 slice, maybe 3... Regardless, we still loved the ramen! Had to order extra noodles to add in. VERY GOOD.

AKAMARU MODERN RAMEN-this is the original, plus 1 level up with flavors. If you are into stronger flavors, this is the ramen for you. Even though the pork and egg are the same as the classic ramen...we still ordered extra noodles (kae-dama). The texture of the noodles was amazing! VERY GOOD.

MATCHA BRULEE-green tea creme brulee. The flavor of the green tea was intense & satisfying. It leaves your mouth with a slight bitterness of the tea which we loved. VERY GOOD.

We did not get all the sides to add to the ramen. Definitely have to order more added ingredients next time. We are not sure if it is fair to compare to Ippudo in Japan. All we know is that we missed the ramen in Japan a lot! Ippudo NYC is the closest we can get. In comparison to its Japanese-sister store, the portion seems to be a little smaller. Ippudo NYC has more appetizers and we were pleasantly surprised. But, it is all about the RAMEN afterall. Overall, we've had a very memorable experience! Try it for yourself! ! (And yes, we pigged out!)

Soup of the noodle was not hot

I had a early lunch today.
In order for them to maintain the quality of the food, I was impressed with their services which were implemented as if they read a written manual.
I noticed they changed the taste and temperature of Ramen noodles slightly so that American people could enjoy.

Cupcake Fiasco

This is my first review on Citysearch, but unfortunately there are NO ACCOLADES for Ippudo. I would award them 0 stars, but Citysearch doesn't give me that option. I've been coming here for ramen, since I moved to NY about 2 years ago; but yesterday, I abruptly left the restaurant when management decided to slap me with a surcharge of $4/person for eating a cupcake in their restaurant. No one gave me a warning, but they just automatically added the ridiculous surcharge to my tab. I went late in the afternoon, and did not have to wait for a table, but for some reason, things were EXTREMELY SLOW in the kitchen. I mean, come on, it should take 5 minutes to bring out a bowl of ramen. I was STARVING and the only thing to stave off my hunger were the cupcakes that I bought from Butter Lane. I asked if, instead, I could order an appetizer or drinks, but they didn't even give me the option. Moreover, I think it's annoying when this "policy" was not listed anywhere on the menu. The manager on duty said management is allowed to do whatever they please, but shouldn't they, instead, try to please the customers? Afterall, you are paying $15 for a bowl of peasant food. So fellow ramen enthusiasts, beware!

Ramen richness awaits

This place gets 5 stars for its ramen. It was very juicy and rich, with plenty of meaty broth surrounding the tasty noodles and a couple of slices of savory pork. One can see why people line up and wait for a while (a half hour for me) to pay top dollar for a bowl of noodle soup. You can get a very nice bowl of noodle soup elsewhere in NY for half the price. The service was brisk and the servers were enjoyable to talk with. I think they could use a little help with their waiting area. You have to remember to check back with them occasionally, because they won't say your name very loud and they might not remember your face. I take away a star because of the atmosphere. The seating arrangements are all right, but the loud music and trendy surroundings do not encourage one to unwind for a bit. It almost seems like they want you to gulp and run so that they can seat another party. Still, I would come back for more of that lush ramen.
