K Donald Shelbourne, MD

Dr. Shelbourne has dedicated his career to the treatment of knee problems for 30 years. He also pioneered the contralateral ACL reconstruction technique for torn anterior cruciate ligaments and developed the accelerated ACL reconstruction rehabilitation protocol utilized around the world. Dr. Shelbourne’s specialties include orthopaedic and arthroscopic knee surgery, knee ligament reconstruction, patella realignment, and rehabilitation.

Dr. Shelbourne began his orthopaedic practice in 1982. He established the Shelbourne Knee Center in 2004, which includes the clinic, surgery, physical therapy and a research department. His research has focused on advancing the surgical treatment and rehabilitation of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Dr. Shelbourne has performed more than 6000 ACL reconstructions. The progress and results of surgical patients are closely monitored through this research, which Dr. Shelbourne has shared through the publication of over 150 journal articles and 40 book chapters. He has also given presentations and speeches across the globe to share his knowledge with orthopaedic surgeons worldwide. Through his ongoing research, Dr. Shelbourne is able to provide up-to-date treatment and knee rehabilitation methods for patients worldwide.

In 1994, Dr. Shelbourne began offering the option of using the patellar tendon graft from the non-injured (contralateral) knee. This advancement in treatment offers patients the ability to rehabilitate their knee faster with more predictable results. Over 2,000 patients have undergone this procedure and most athletes return to their sport by 5-6 months after surgery.
