Dr. Hilburn is a three-war veteran, having served in the United States Army for 35 years. He began his career as a private and trained as a medic. Later he became a practical nurse and eventually attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Dr. Hilburn eventually retired from the Army as a full colonel. 

At 60, Dr. Hilburn completed a geriatrics fellowship at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He also trained at the Washington School of Psychiatry in geriatric psychotherapy and at the Center For Group Studies in New York City, New York.
