She specializes in the treatment of breast cancer. She was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she completed a training in Medical Oncology. Subsequently, she received training in laboratory immunology and experimental therapeutics at the Cleveland Clinic. After a year of Chief Residency at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, she completed her fellowship in Hematology & Oncology at the Cleveland Clinic. Her research focus is on clinical trials involving the development of novel therapeutic approaches in early and advanced breast cancer. She has a special interest in prevention of breast cancer. She also has a background in safety and quality improvement for patients with solid malignancies. Dr. Varella teaches medical students and fellows at the NewYork- Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medicine.
