Matthew Bruns, DNP

Matt Bruns is a board-certified orthopedic nurse practitioner with SSM Health Orthopedics who specializes in helping people manage their bone health. He has more than 20 years of clinical experience in treating patients with bone health concerns. Matt sees women and men of all ages including athletes who are at risk for osteoporosis or fragility fracture and works with their medical providers to determine the type of treatment needed. Some patients can improve bone health with nutrition and therapy, whereas other patients also may need medication. Matt works with a multidisciplinary team of medical doctors, orthopedic surgeons, nurses, clinical nutritionists, and occupational and physical therapists who can assist, if needed, to determine the best treatment plan for each person.

In addition to treating bone health patients, Matt is the orthopedic nurse practitioner for Dr. Greg Nelson, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in adult reconstruction of the hip, knee, and shoulder. Matt sees patients in clinic and assists in surgery.

Matt received a Master of Science degree in nursing from Saint Louis University in 2005 and a doctorate in nursing practice from Maryville University, St. Louis, Missouri, in 2016. He received international certification for clinical densitometry in 2018. Matt serves as a preceptor for nursing students across several nursing specialties and sits on numerous clinical leadership committees. He is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses, and the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
