Joseph Kim

Joseph J. Kim, MD specializes in Complex Surgical Oncology as a member of Summit Health's General Surgery team. He is board certified in General Surgery and is one of only a few surgeons in the country that is board certified in Complex Surgical Oncology. After finishing General Surgery Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, Dr. Kim underwent an additional year of fellowship training in liver and kidney transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He then returned to Mount Sinai Hospital to complete a fellowship in Complex Surgical Oncology.<br />

Dr. Kim’s areas of expertise include tumors of the pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary system, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, and rectum. He also has expertise in treating skin cancers and sarcomas, soft tissue tumors of the chest, abdomen, retroperitoneum, and extremities. Additionally, he is trained in the use of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion (HIPEC), which is used to treat cancers of the abdominal (peritoneal) lining, a condition often referred to as pseudomyxoma peritonei or carcinomatosis. This technique has been found to be helpful for cancers that originate from the colon, ovaries, appendix, and stomach, as well as mesothelioma.<br />

Dr. Kim believes in a multidisciplinary approach to treating patients, which include specialists including gastroenterologists, oncologists, radiologists, and nurses. However, he believes the most important part of the treatment team is the patient, and empowering them to participate in their care in order to make informed decisions, is imperative.<br />

Dr. Kim is a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS,) American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA,) and Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO.) He has presented at each of these society’s annual meetings.<br />

When he is not caring for patients, Dr. Kim enjoys all manner of sports, including basketball, fishing and golf.
