Susan Herman, MD, is the director of the Epilepsy Program and a professor in the Department of Neurology at Barrow Neurological Institute. She is board certified in neurology and the subspecialties of epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Herman’s expertise includes the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy. She is a national leader in electroencephalography (EEG) technology and interpretation, including video-EEG monitoring for epilepsy, continuous EEG monitoring in critically ill patients, and high-density EEG and source localization. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, and the American Epilepsy Society.
Dr. Herman earned her medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. She completed her neurology residency and a fellowship in epilepsy, clinical neurophysiology, and neuroepidemiology at The Neurological Institute of New York at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
Dr. Herman’s clinical research focuses on epilepsy and EEG. She has served as a local principal investigator for multiple clinical trials of new epilepsy treatments, and she has also studied the treatment of subclinical seizures in children with cerebral malaria and the development of epilepsy in patients with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. She is currently a co-principal investigator of the Epilepsy Learning Healthcare System, a network where families, community members, clinicians, researchers, and healthcare leaders can collaborate to improve care and outcomes for people with epilepsy.
