About Dr. Barker

K. Douglas Barker, DMD, is a cosmetic and general dentist at Newport Center Smile Design in Newport Beach, California. He is most passionate about implant dentistry and uses his surgical and prosthetic skill set to restore people’s smiles in a conservative and non-invasive way. At Newport Center Smile Design, he performs the majority of oral and dental implant surgeries himself, and offers Invisalign®, full mouth reconstructions, and custom veneers.
Dr. Barker decided at a very young age that he wanted to be a dentist. As an orthodontic patient from the age of seven, he remembers the warm compassion he received from his orthodontist and their staff, which left a great impression on him. Today, he strives to exhibit the same compassion for his patients.
Originally from Florida, Dr. Barker attended the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in zoology and participated in research on American alligators. He stayed at UF to complete his Doctorate of Dental Medicine, and he is proud to be a Florida Gator. After graduating from dental school, Dr. Barker moved to Brooklyn, New York, for a two-year general practice residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. During his residency, he became interested in cosmetic and complex prosthetic cases, including placing and restoring implants. He then went on to practice dentistry in Manhattan and Queens.
Dr. Barker engages in continuing education and attends the annual Greater New York Dental Meeting in New York City. He has also been taking more advanced prosthetic courses, specifically in implants, and is a member of Spear Education, a platform that provides continuing dental education. He is a member of the American Dental Association and the California Dental Association.
Outside the office, Dr. Barker is married to his lovely wife, Heather, and they have two children. When he’s not working, he enjoys being outdoors cycling, running, surfing, swimming, snowboarding, or wakeboarding. He also enjoys mountain biking and competes in triathlons every season. Dr. Barker stays actively involved in his community and has participated in mission trips to Honduras and the Dominican Republic to provide dental services to people in need. He has also biked across the United States with Push America, an organization that raises funds and awareness for individuals with disabilities.
