A hernia is formed when a part of the abdominal cavity extends through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm. Factors that are the reason for the development of hiatus hernia are an expansion of esophageal hiatus due to developmental defects, an increase in the abdominal thoracic pressure gradient, and decreases of elastic fibers in the pharyngoesophageal membrane with aging. The hiatus hernia can be classified into four different types
Type -1: Sliding Hernia is when the gastroesophageal is relocated into the thoracic cavity where the stomach remains in the abdominal cavity.
Type 2: Paraesophageal hernia where the gastroesophageal junction remains the same but the gastric fundus bulges into the diaphragmatic hiatus.
Type 3: In this type, both gastroesophageal and the stomach herniates above the diaphragm.
Type 4: In this type other organs like colon herniates along with the stomach above the diaphragm.
