When patients choose Suzie Kuhnen, DO, they’re choosing a compassionate, knowledgeable care provider. As the only female plastic surgeon in central Iowa, Dr. Kuhnen is committed to serving each patient she sees at Iowa Specialty Surgeons in West Des Moines, Iowa.
A native of West Mansfield, Ohio, Dr. Kuhnen headed to the University of Dayton to complete her undergraduate degree. Then she attended the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, where she earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. 
To further her expertise, she also completed an extensive five-year general surgery residency at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. Afterward, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, for a three-year plastic surgery fellowship at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. 
During her fellowship, Dr. Kuhnen put down roots in Des Moines, Iowa, building her community there. Today, she’s excited to offer her expertise — and uniquely female perspective — to her patients throughout the area. 
Dr. Kuhnen prioritizes personalized, patient-centered care. She takes the time to talk with patients, understanding not just the procedures they want, but their ultimate goals. Her aim is to help each patient feel more confident.
When she’s not serving patients, you can find Dr. Kuhnen working with one of the charitable organizations about which she’s passionate. Some of the local charities she works with include Youth Homes of Mid-America, O’Donnell & Friends Charities, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
