Gavin D. Roach, MD

Academic Appointment: Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor
Dr. Roach is a Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and serves as the Director of Pediatric Hematology. Originally from New York State, Dr. Roach moved to California to begin his pediatrics training at UCLA in 2008. He completed both his residency in pediatrics (2011) and his fellowship in hematology and oncology (2014) at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital. He assumed Directorship of Pediatric Hematology in 2016 and currently oversees the care of children with benign hematologic conditions in the outpatient clinic as well the inpatient consultation service.
Dr. Roach specializes in the research and treatment of benign hematologic disorders including hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease, and other rare bleeding disorders, as well as thrombotic disorders such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and stroke. He treats patients with bone marrow failure, as well as other disorders of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. He also treats patients with hemoglobinopathies including sickle cell disease and thalassemia. UCLA is referral center for the State newborn screening program for hemoglobinopathies.
In addition to his appointment at UCLA, Dr. Roach provides care for patients with bleeding disorders at the Orthopaedic Institute for Children (OIC) Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) in Downtown Los Angeles. This HTC pioneered the concept of providing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team approach to the management of children and adults with bleeding disorders, and as a result the Center was designated an International Hemophilia Training Center in 1970 � one of the first four in the world � by the World Federation of Hemophilia.
Dr. Roach also serves as the Associate Program Director for the UCLA Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Training Program since 2016. His other responsibilities include overseeing the Pediatric Hemapheresis Service, teaching courses in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and giving frequent educational lectures to audiences throughout Southern California.
