I gave them four stars but service was more like three. Our food was wonderful and tasty. I loved the Mushroom Ravioli and Asparagus Pizza. The portions are huge! Now the service. We came in a little after the doors open it was as though...

Excellent!

Enormous portions. Split an entree and you will still be stuffed! We had a linguini with lobster meat, it was delicious! Pasta entrees are about $15, they have a wide selection of pizzas, pastas and meat entrees. This is a good spot for families too, and the patio is lovely in nice weather.

Reasonably-priced Italian in south Evanston

I was in the mood for Italian and wanted to try someplace new, so I picked Trattoria D.O.C. off the list of Italian restaurants on Citysearch. I wasn't sure what to expect as, although there was a 4.5 star rating, there were no reviews. My visit started with easy street parking (at 8:45 on a Saturday evening). The restaurant was busy, but not packed and I was able to be seated right away. The main dining room consists of a bunch of closely packed tables. It's not very noisy, although it wasn't quiet either; I could clearly hear the conversations of the tables next to me. It's not a romantic setting, although it was certainly pleasant.

They had a decent menu, although I must admit I was in the mood for gnocchi so I only skimmed it. The only gnocchi I saw was on their specials (gnocchi di ricotta, I believe) so I ordered that. They brought me olive oil and a basket full of bread slices then, almost before I'd finished preparing the olive oil, a plate full of gnocchi arrived. It was good. I wouldn't go out of my way to order it again but I wouldn't discourage anyone from ordering it, either. After the gnocchi, I checked out their dessert menu but it was expensive (a dessert costs almost as much as an entree) and nothing stood out, so I decided to pass.

Also worth mentioning is their pizza. I didn't order it but I did see many other people order it. I don't know how it tastes, but it looked very good. They offer a Sicilian pizza that's thin and about the size of a plate. It looks to be enough to share or maybe just right for someone with a larger appetite. There are many varieties; their pizza makes up about half of their menu. I'll definitely be back to try it.

All told, it was a good dinner out on a Saturday night. Both the service and the food were good and, even if I weren't planning to go back to try the pizza, I'd go back anyway.

Almost 5 star

I've eaten here half a dozen times now, and I love the place. The atmosphere is well appointed, yet comfortable. My only caution is: don't sit too near the wood burning oven... it tends to be hot in that part of the restaurant.

I love the menu selections.... the appetizers are very good, and I especially recommend their grilled vegetables. Their salads are WONDERFUL, very fresh ingredients, light and delicious dressings, and great selections. I especially love the "tricolore" raddiccio, beets, arugula and parmesan shavings on top.

Their pastas really are first rate. Two of my favorites are the gnocchi with a yummy creamy gorgonzola sauce, and the tagliatelli (spelling ??) with a wonderful bolonaise, three meat sauce.

I'm not as enthusiastic about their meat/fish entrees, only because I was once disappointed in the lamb shank I ordered, and the striped bass in orange sauce I had was pretty good, but not great.

Their desserts are exceptional. I had the best Italian lemon ice there that I've ever had, and their chocolate "molten lava" cake is really yummy.

I've never had their pizza but intend to order it next time I go. It's very popular, judging from the number of people I saw eating it. It's really thin crust and looks really good.
