Fernando Contreras

Fernando Contreras, MD is Board Certified in Cardiology and Cardiology and practices at Cardiology Clinic of San Antonio.

Dr. Contreras grew up loving electronics, physics, and trigonometry. His father, an electrical engineer, was an important early influence, and Dr. Contreras knew that a career in medicine would offer the perfect combination of science and the opportunity to interact with people and build lasting relationships. He decided that becoming a doctor—and being a really good doctor—was the challenge he wanted to take on.

Dr. Contreras graduated summa cum laude from medical school at Escuela de Medicina Ignacio A. Santos - Tecnológico de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico. He then completed his internal medicine internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts. During his internal medicine training, Dr. Contreras discovered cardiac electrophysiology and instantly fell in love with the field. He completed his fellowship in cardiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, also a teaching hospital affiliated with Harvard, followed by a fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology in the same institution. At the end of his fellowship, he joined the electrophysiology faculty at BIDMC and served as an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Contreras practiced and taught trainees there until joining Cardiology Clinic of San Antonio in mid-2018.

A particular area of clinical and research interest for Dr. Contreras is the study of the mechanisms of arrhythmia and the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic technologies for the management of cardiac arrhythmias. Despite his passion for innovation in this field, Dr. Contreras is an advocate for the appropriate use of the latest technology, matching it with the patient’s individual needs.

He is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society. He has received numerous honors and awards, including the George E. Altman, MD and Harriet Altman Annual Cardiology Fellow Award for demonstrating a high level of performance in his professional pursuits and delivering a noteworthy level of excellence in providing humanitarian care to patients and their families.
