McElvin Pope, DPM, welcomes the men and women of New York City at his Manhattan practice, Surgical Podiatry PC. Concerned for his patients’ overall well-being, Dr. Pope genuinely cares about doing whatever’s necessary to meet each person’s individual needs. He employs a systematic approach that values conservative treatments before opting for surgical intervention.
Dr. Pope treats the full range of foot and ankle conditions, with a particular focus on podiatric disorders secondary to diabetes and its complications, including diabetic peripheral neuropathy, vasculopathy, dermatological infections, and other infectious diseases of the lower extremities.
As an undergraduate at the State University of New York College at Old Westbury, Dr. Pope participated in research with the biological science program before graduating with a Bachelor of Science in biology.
Dr. Pope received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from New York College of Podiatric Medicine, then pursued residency training in general podiatry at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens.
His training in podiatric medicine and surgery encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of biomechanical pathologies of the foot and ankle such as bunions, hammertoes, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles tendonitis.
Under the mentorship of Dr. George Stefano, Dr. Pope served as a research assistant for the Career Opportunities in Research program sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health and the International Neuroscience Foundation. In Dr. Stefano’s neuroimmunological laboratory, Dr. Pope conducted studies on the role of endogenous morphine in various tissues.
His work at the neuroimmunological lab led to a fellowship with the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health, where he studied traditional treatment techniques at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy. After his time in Italy, his research findings were presented at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
When he’s not helping patients at his private practice, Dr. Pope works at an Article 28 clinic.
