Amy M. Saunders, LICSW

Amy Saunders is a mental health clinician at The University of Vermont Medical Center. She specializes in substance use and mental health counseling.

Amy strives to develop a relationship with her clients where they feel comfortable sharing what is really going on in their lives and where they can feel that they are really being heard in a non-judgmental and accepting way. Generally, a person knows what they need, and she sees her role as partnering with them to help guide them in making choices and decisions based on what is most important to them.

Amy uses evidence-based approaches to help provide strategies and skills that can be used to improve her patients’ lives, whether that be skills to help with distress tolerance, emotion regulation, or effective communication. She also helps people look at their negative thought patterns which can lead to poor self-esteem and continued substance use. She believes it is important to have a collaborative partnership, where people can feel supported and accepted no matter where they are in their life and their sobriety. It is all about being person centered and working to find what is important to each individual.
