The optometrist performs routine eye care, conducts eye examinations and prescribes corrective lenses. Optometrists also diagnose and prescribe treatment for eye diseases. Treatment may include medication in the form of drops, pills or injections. The optometrist should not be confused with an ophthalmologist, who is a medical doctor trained to perform corrective eye surgery, or opticians, who are trained to grind lenses but not licensed to examine or treat patients.
