Ashwini Kumar

Ashwini Kumar MD, FACS is Board Certified in Surgery and also specializes in Bariatric Surgery at Methodist South Physician Group in Atascosa County. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the American College of Surgery, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the J. Bradley Aust Surgical Society and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Kumar practices Surgery but his true passion includes advanced laparoscopic procedures, bariatric surgery and single-site surgeries which mean fewer and smaller scars, less pain and generally faster recovery time compared to open surgeries.

Chasing his dream to get the best surgical training in the world, Dr. Kumar came to the United States after completing medical school and one residency in India and another residency in the United Kingdom. He then completed a research fellowship before a fellowship at University of Miami/ Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Department of Advanced Laparoendoscopy and Bariatric Surgery. In 2015, he came to Texas as an Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon and Surgical Endoscopist. The following year he was named Chief of Surgery. In mid-2017, Methodist Healthcare System acquired STRMC, now Methodist Hospital South, and Dr. Kumar joined Methodist South Physician Group. He has offices in Jourdanton and downtown San Antonio at Metropolitan Methodist Gateway.

Dr. Kumar sees patients at two Methodist South Physician Group locations – in Atascosa County and in downtown San Antonio. He also sees patients at both Methodist Hospital South and Methodist Hospital |Metropolitan.
