Seniors and those with disabilities sometimes need a helping hand when it comes to living independently and being empowered to make choices about their lives. The mission of Southeast Alaska Independent Living (Sail, Inc.) in Juneau, AK, is to provide those opportunities through a combination of social services and support.

By following the five core social services, the staff at Sail, Inc. promotes independence and self-determination for seniors and those with disabilities. Their five core services include:

Advocacy: They work alongside schools, businesses, government entities and organizations to raise awareness and promote inclusion.

Transition Services: Whether it’s a life transition from one stage to the next or a living transition from a nursing home or long-term care facility into something less restrictive, they provide resources to help promote continued and newly found independence.

Information and referral: They harbor a host of knowledge about community services providers with whom they can help you connect.

IL Skill Training: By offering various classes that teach basic independent living skills, seniors and those with physical and mental disabilities walk away with the knowledge and confidence to partake in various day-to-day tasks including cooking, cleaning and socializing, as well as help them gain financial independence through the education of budgeting and home finance.

Peer Support: Their peer support network gives individuals a space to share their struggles and triumphs with others in similar living situations. Peer support allows individuals to recognize their ability to succeed.
