Judo is a martial art that was created in 1882 by Jigoro Kano as an alternative to different styles of jujitsu. In 1964, Judo became an Olympic event and the the sport has been growing in the United States since then. Un-like Karate and Tae kwon do, there is no kicking or punching in judo. The martial art combines throws and take-down techniques similar to wrestling with ground techniques such as pins, chokes, and arm bars. The chokes and arm bars do not start until teenage years and are practiced with extreme caution and respect to avoid injuries. Judo can satisfy many athletic goals. The sport can teach discipline, respect, and coordination. It is a good work out and there are many competition opportunities.
