In Toni Morrison's Beloved, Sethe describes two places, a plantation she worked at as a slave, known as Sweet Home, and her home, 124 Bluestone Road, which is haunted by Sethe's dead daughter, Beloved. In her first descriptions of 124, Sethe uses language to that shows the miserable conditions of living in a haunted house, and there are no images that display the good in 124. In her descriptions of Sweet Home, Sethe uses language to show the evil in the plantation, but also uses language that tells readers Sethe appreciated the beauty of the place, and some of the feelings it left her with. Considering the symbolic meaning of both places, it is very ironic that Sethe recognizes the evil rather than the good of 124 Bluestone Road, and both good and evil in Sweet Home.
