Dear Clients.
You may have heard that there have been changes to the income tax filing deadline for this year. I want to confirm the correct information for you.
Because of the COVID-19 Coronavirus,
Ø Both the IRS and CA FTB have extended the deadline for filing income tax returns to July 15, 2020.
Ø Both the IRS and CA have extended the deadline for making payments to July 15, 2020 and there will be no penalties or interest if you make the payment after April 15, 2020.
Ø 1st quarter 2020 Estimated Federal Tax Payments may also be deferred until July 15, 2020 but June 15 Estimated Tax payments are still due by June 15, 2020.
Ø California 1st and 2nd quarter 2020 Estimated Tax Payments may both be deferred until July 15, 2020.
Ø Deadline for contributions to a 2019 IRA are extended to July 15, 2020.
Additional information can be found at the IRS website in their special section “Coronavirus Tax Relief” at https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus.
And for California, at the FTB website “COVID-19; Coronavirus special tax relief and updates” https://www.ftb.ca.gov/about-ftb/newsroom/covid-19/index.html.
Most other states have also changed their filing deadline. Check your state tax department’s website for current information.
We do not need to file an extension form to get this extension to July 15; it is automatic. If we cannot finish your return to be filed by July 15, then we will need to file Form 4868 Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return which gives you an extension to October 15, 2020 to file your 2019 Income Tax return. California accepts the Federal extension.
