The entire medical establishment seems confusing and disconnected to most people. Patients are bewildered, misinformed and misdirected, because there is no consistency in medical care, and as patients, we all feel vulnerable to a system that sometimes appears to take better care of itself than our patients. That is why having a trusted partner in managing your healthcare is vitally important, and trust is the basis of any meaningful relationship.
It is not just about getting the best health care…it is also about being referred to like-minded specialists, about having that care coordinated and monitored, and perhaps most importantly, avoiding treatment that is not needed, or possibly even hazardous. That is the reason every person should have a primary care doctor—not just to see that you receive the very best, but also that you are steered away from treatments that lack a proven benefit to you.
My approach to caring for my patients is to invite them to join me in a partnership for their health, focusing first on prevention, and aggressively pursuing that which is not preventable. I embrace a holistic approach, which incorporates nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, mental and spiritual health, all in the context of the family unit.
Entire families are encouraged to be cared for in our practice because illness always has a context, and understanding that context leads to care that is comprehensive, kinder and better informed. The relationship gained from treating all members of the family yields benefits to the patient, the family and even the physician.
As much as is humanly possible, we strive to see our patients the same day when they are sick, because sending them to the ER or urgent care fragments their care further. We strive to avoid this and also ask our patients to try to avoid this as well for the same reasons.
