The Poogan Experience

I experienced a ghost there! While having breakfast on the patio, two chickadees fluttered down and pecked at my biscuits. I felt something heavy at this time across my feet. I found this odd because I knew Zoe was supposed to be around, but across my feet?? Being a dog lover, the ghost tour I went on later made it clear when I was informed that sometimes the spirit of Poogan, the dog, is sometimes felt there. Great southern breakfast, but I will always be enthralled with the ghosts!

Worth A Try

My wife and I had lunch there Sunday last, but we only had the gumbo (wonderful), fried green tomatoes (sauce made the dish), and alligator (average). The young lady that waited on us was fantastic, she mothered us. I saw the breakfasts that other people were being served and they looked fantastic.

Try the South

For me, a Yankee boy, this place is not all that bad. Yes, it's a tourist spot - which may mean that it's less than authentic - but it's still pretty good.
Try any of their items "calabash", still not sure exactly what that means, other than it's fried.
I've been there with my family and I have taken very large tour groups. Everyone always left very happy.

Nice place to have breakfast on the front porch.

I enjoyed having Eggs Benedict with champagne & orange juice on the front porch with my friends. We had a good time watching the little birds and laughing it up. The waitress was delightful. The food was really good. I would definitely go back as long as I could sit on the front porch.

Eww-gan's Porch

The atmosphere was kind of neat, being in an old house and everything. I was afraid to use the bathroom as it's supposedly "haunted". The biscuits were good, the honey butter was yummy, and the fish was pretty tasty. But my brother and aunt were both dissatisfied with their dishes, and so I must conclude that they definitely focus more on the restaurant's ghost legend than on their food.

Charming, but inconsistent

Lovely location and great Southern sweet tea, but watch out for the added spice on the chicken puff pastry dish!
I happened to be dining with a member of my family that has a distinct dislike for spice and nowhere on the menu did it mention an inclusion of spice for this particular dish (perhaps it was a "chef's discretion?"). Didn't bother me, but then again, I do like a little zip in my food!
The biscuits and honey butter were great, the crabcake sandwich average, and after a lunch I wasn't in the mood for dessert.
The bathrooms were pathetic (2 women's stalls for the whole restaurant) and had large waiting lines that erupted into the small hallway into the dining area (rather affects the ambience when a restaurant begins to look like a gas station!).
But I have an affinity for restaurants with history and character, and this surely has both.
I might be back, but only with some friends or family who may be visiting and will enjoy the quaintness over the food.
PS For those of you with K9 friends, they do allow dining with your pets on the porch out front.

worst service ever! discrimination galore

We were highly recommended by the hotel concierge to stop over this place for a brunch before we left Charleston....So we did. the wait was half hour and when our name was called the person said " the name that start with a "D"" & we knew it was us! We were seated and after 4 rounds of coffee and one hour after placing our order we were told that they forgot to turn in our order! We werent apologised to but just told...& so we waited for 15 more minutes & after seeing the family that came in 30 mins after us leave happy n full we were disgusted at the treatment meted out at us... So we requested to talk to the manager who told us that she had taken care of the food (read we dont have to pay anything) & we were welcome to eat it, or take it with us, or leave it. How insulting? I think jim Carrey was joking with them on the note thats plastered on their walls, but they should probably hear from our lawyers!
By the way we were the only brown skinned group of 5 people in the room! I expected better from someone from New York even if they are in the deep south...More tolerance, more courtesy, and an apology?
I cant comment about the food as we could hardly have a few bites after being treated this way...we lost our appetite to four cups of coffee and discrimination!

Poor service, extremely discriminatory.

This was the worst restaurant experience of my lifetime. The staff is extremely rude, they do not have any courtesy or customer service sense. We were served food after 2 hours of waiting, were not apologized to and to top it off, the manager insulted us by telling us(in so many words) that we were free to leave and not come back; she said something like "the food has been taken care of, u can do whatever u want with the food" Lets sum it up by saying 'If u are not a white male, dont go here'

Traditionally a family favorite-but...

We have visited Charleston many times, and always had to visit Poogan's. However, the last time was somewhat disappointing. The service was slow for a weeknight at 5pm. The food was served unevenly-slow on the appetizer, then entrees came so quick we couldn't enjoy the appetizer. Felt rushed although there were no big wait for the table that we could see. I would agree with the other review that the bathrooms leave alot to be desired but it is an old building. We do enjoy the ambience and even buy a Tshirt now and again. We might give it a try again this summer but it has definitely fallen off the "must do" list.

delicious food, bad service, great history, worth the wait!

The food was delicious! It has great history in the house. The employees were nice about questions of the history. The wait was pretty long but worth it! The employees are nice and love it when people take pictures for ghosts. All i have to say is , bring your cameras!

Great Breakfast

On a weekend trip to Charleston, we tried country ham benedict and crabcakes benedict for breakfast. Both were great. Ham was well seasoned and aged, but not too salty. Crabcakes were light & delicious. Our server, Catrina, was pleasant, attentive & witty. Biscuits were large, light, fluffy & tasty. Homefries were ok, but seasoning was not to my taste.

Bad service and lousy food

This was one of the worst experiences we have had and we eat out a lot. For Sunday Brunch at 10:30 the wait for a table was about 20 minutes. We expected that. However, once we were seated upstairs it took about 10 minutes to even get our drink and food order taken. It took 45 minutes to get our food. People who came in with us were gone 25 minutes before we were fed. I had the veggie omelet. It was gray! It looked terrible. My husband had the low country breakfast and he said it was terrible. We both had grits and his were very dry and hard. Others around us were complaining about the service, too. Several patrons had to get up to get their own drink refills. At one time there were 4 dirty tables (out of 10) and no one was in any hurry to clean them. The place had people all over waiting for tables. Fine another place to eat. We recommend Magnolias!

Miss Rude meaner than a junk yard dog

We made reservation for 5 pm for our 41st anniversary dinner. We are staying at the navy base in goose creek. We didn't know how long it would take to get into town so you guessed it we got there 20 minutes early. It was Sept3, labor day and little traffic. A nice young man said we could wait at the bar. As we made our way to the bar Miss Rude jumped from the corner and told us to leave, that they opened at 5. We try to say the young man told us but before we could finish she told us again to leave. We came to Charleston to eat our anniversary dinner at Poogan's as we heard many great things. We should have gone to Savanah to Lady's and Son. Thanks Miss Rude .

You must try the Fried Green Tomato BLT

My girlfriends went to Poogans for brunch one day. The wait was exceptionally long but the food was good. Our server was helpful and suggested celebratory memosas. You could tell that there weren't enough servers for the amount of tables though; this probably made the wait so long! My one friend got the Fried Tomato BLT, which was out of this world! I got the fried green tomato benedict, which was good except my eggs were overcooked. I did notice, however, that the chef included an extra yolk on the plate-probably because he/she noticed that the eggs were overcooked.

Poogans was good but not as delicious as some other places in Charleston.

Outstanding Meal

We chose Poogan's Porch not only for the delicious choices we found on their menu when searching online, but also for the history of its location and the ghost stories that come along with it. We had a 5 pm reservation, arrived at 4:55 and the first thing we were told is they wouldn't be seating for a bit because it wasn't 5 o'clock. I thought that odd since the restaurant was completely empty with the servers standing around doing nothing. When we commented on the fact that it was 4:55 she said she didn't realize the time and seated us immediately. The atmosphere was very quaint and we were seated near the cozy fireplace. The room was cold and drafty; yes, even in Charleston it can get chilly. The bathrooms were also cold and not very well cared for. Our waitress was friendly enough but seemed preoccupied in other thoughts. We inquired about the ghost history there and she did not want to tell us anything about it. We asked how long she had worked there and were told 18 years. Now it seems to me if someone has worked there that long they would not only know the history but be anxious to share it with the customers. She was not very attentive. Another waitress serving another table was very anxious to tell ghost stories and we sat there wishing we had her as our waitress. The food was outstanding! The freshly made hot biscuits left you craving more (which we did request). I ordered the pan seared pork tenderloin with sweet mashed and asparagus. It was the best pork I've had in years. My companion ordered the Plantation Fried Chicken with mashed and string beans. I sampled his meal and, to be honest, had almost wished I ordered it. The portion sizes were great and we actually didn't have room for dessert. We did order the peanut butter pie and also the bread pudding to go. Both desserts were delicious later on that night. If asked if I would recommend this restaurant, absolutely, but be sure to request a waitress that knows some of the history..

Tourist trap with mediocre food.

It's hard to imagine how this restaurant survives, except for its reliance on tour book comments--which don't seem accurate in our view. Service was fine, ambiance about what one would expect for a central Charleston restaurant. Wine list appropriate for the menu. Food was another matter: Fried oysters were more breading than oyster; scallops were overcooked and not very flavorful, despite heavy cheese topping; jambalaya passable, but not noteworthy; crab and crawfish cakes rated okay. Sides for all dishes were served cold. Nothing spectacular about the atmosphere and no idea how this restaurant could achieve a high rating.

Enjoyable evening

Just enjoyed a wonderful evening at Poogan's Porch. I live in Charleston and this was my first time here. The reviews didn't quite match my experience tonight. Our waiter was so nice and friendly. It did take about 20 minutes for us to actually order, but after we ordered, the appetizer was out in less than 10 minutes and the meal in less than 20. The food melted in my mouth. I had the Charleston Chicken, which is chicken on a flaky pastry with a creamy mushroom wine sauce..MMM! And there were plenty left overs to take home. My companions enjoyed the Calabash seafood platter and the pecan crusted flounder...wonderful!!!! All dishes came with Veggies and rice, and some mouth watering biscuits. If you visit the restaurant in February the usually have a special because it is the restaurants anniversary. They use 1978 prices, which is a steal! be sure to call ahead and make sure. Reservations are a good idea!

Weird menu and over-priced

My family and I visited Poogan's once and that will by our first and only time. I saw absolutely nothing special about this place. In fact, the menu is just plain weird. I guess if you like fancy-smancy "off the wall" and expensively priced "Food Channel" type cuisine then by all means eat there. It has been a couple of years ago but I do remember that it cost my two children and myself over $80 to eat there and that did not include the tip!

If memory serves correctly, I do not remember experiencing any rude behavior on the part of the staff who waited on us. The restaurant is located in a lovely old house (reportedly haunted, although the waitress I asked about the "haunting" said she had never seen a ghost there).
My biggest complaint was the price and type of food they offered - just not my "cup of tea" I suppose. My two favorite Charleston Restaurants are now "Hyman's Seafood" and "Bubba Gump's" and I highly recommend either of those two places. ;)

True Fine Southern Cuisine

The food and staff are wonderful. My daughter who hates grits, love's Poogans' Shrimp & Grits. The Bananna & Pecan pancakes are my daughters favorite though. The Poached eggs with smoked salom is unbelieveably superb! Be sure to try the fried alligator it's the best I have ever had!
This is a restaurant for those who like "Fine Southern Cuisine"! The menu is not weird as listed in a previous review, if you have small children who have not been exposed to fine cuisine, go to IHOP.
