Great dog grooming at great price.
I brought my golden retriever here for a shave. They did a great job and a great price. Normally it is so expensive to have my big dog shaved!

Do you have a phone?
I left 4 messages at various different times of the day and got no response. Being that it's so close to my house I thought I'd just go in and make the appointment. The people there were friendly but as I was driving home one of the ladies I'd just talked with called me back regarding my voice messages... interesting. I have yet to go to the appointment but will update with that information promptly.

Owner needs a new attitude!
My first visit to Hair of the Dog was on a Saturday morning. I walked in without an appointment, the staff was pleasant and my dog was ready to be picked up in an hour. Another appointment, on a Sunday, took 45 minutes. The employee who worked on my dog and the owner were friendly. Today I dropped my dog off for a 2:00 appointment. I was told I'd be called when he was ready, but no call came. At 4:00, I phoned the shop, and the owner shouted out to an employee in the back asking whether my dog was ready. She then told me the appointment was at 3:00, but they hadn't started on him yet. I told her no, the appointment was at 2:00. The owner then said, well she (the staff person) was wrong, but the dog wasn't ready. She said they would start him now and I could just come get him in half an hour. Arriving at the shop at 4:30 I announced myself to the owner, and the first words out of her mouth were "That will be $21." I asked her what services had been provided, not having yet seen my dog, and she recited them with a glare. I then asked her what my dog had been doing from 2:00 to 4:00, and she snarled, "Playing with the other dogs in the back." I responded that he could have done that with me, and I asked why she bothers making reservations. The owner asked if I had ever had to wait half an hour for a doctor appointment, and informed me that this was Saturday.(?) I replied that this was not a doctor's office and, besides, 2:00 to 4:00 was a 2-hour wait, not a half-hour wait. At that, she marched towards the back where my dog was, pivoted around and hissed, "You know what? I'm not going to charge you and I don't want you coming back!" I guess she showed me! The next thing I knew, my dog trotted out unleashed. She thrust the leash at me before retreating behind her counter. NE Alberta Street has been part of my neighborhood for 23 years, and I like to support local businesses that earn my support. Hair of the Dog is one business I won't miss.

Dog friendly atmosphere
Ive been taking my dog, Molly, to hair of the dog for a while now, sometimes I book an appointment for her to be groomed & sometimes we come in & do a self wash. Im always very happy with the service there, the staff is always helpful in suggesting shampoos & making sure I have everything I need (towels, appron ect) & I know my dog enjoys going there because she gets lots of attention & cookies. I tell all my friends with dogs about them, they have reasonable prices. I also feel good leaving my dog there for a few hours at a time because they've got a cute little backyard & let the dogs run free unlike another groom shop I visited where the dogs were kept in a kennel all day long. I heard about this site & decided to give all my favorite local portland business excellent reviews because I strongly support the small business as I would love to have one of my own some day :) Keep up the good work!

The new groomer wasn't a good choice
I had a steller 5 star review up here before, but last time I brought my dog in I was not treated very nicely. He had been to the dog park and was SUPER muddy and disgusting. I understood this was going to be quite the job to clean him up (but that is what you are in business to do) and I was willing to pay whatever it took to get him looking nice again. However, when I picked him up the groomer (whom I had not seen before so I am assuming he is new) basically accused me of neglecting my dogs' well being because he was so dirty and matted. My dog has wavy/curly hair and when it grows out it is very hard to manage. When he gets wet and dirty it is difficult to clean/brush him. We do the best we can, but dogs do get dirty and matted...they are just being DOGS and having fun. I would be neglecting my dog if i never let him go play and get dirty because I was worried about his hair...not sure if I will chance a return visit since I only pay for a professional groomer when he is too dirty for me to handle and it seems that I'll be complained at if I bring him there in that kind of condition.

former raves turn to rants
We've taken our dog here on a few occasions and usually are very happy with the service. He loves playing with the other dogs and usually looks great. Upon our last visit, we picked him up and were rudely greeted with the price of the cut (prices had recently changed, this was back in May). I was hurried through my questions and rushed out the door. Two days later, while on a walk the dog began to shake his head and was bleeding from the tips of both his ears. Closer inspection showed that he was cut deeply on both ears (he is very hairy and this is easily hidden by his curls) it appeared the cuts had been cauterized and we were never told. He was bleeding daily for the next 3-4 weeks whenever he shook his head (his ears are long and tend to bounce off his neck when he shakes). We would've understood the cuts if the groomer and simply told us, we know he's hairy and it's hard to see where his ear begins and the fur stops. We were shocked when our friends took their dog to be groomed a few weeks later, and the same thing happened (only one ear this time). Would you not want to be told if your child got injured at daycare?? We would! It shows a lack of respect for not only the customers but the animals as well.Worldwide > United States > Portland, OR > Pet Stores
