He received his license as a Certified Public Accountant, got married and opened his own firm in the Renton Highlands area, all in one year, 1985. A friend had been using Charlie for their taxes and thought it would be a safe recommendation. After I had met with him and talked to him about our taxes, I did not feel confident with his recommendation. The process he recommended would require additional paperwork and time to file the documents, which would result in additional costs or fees for him. We placed a retainer since the deadline for the taxes was coming up rapidly and we needed to file quickly. In the meantime, I consulted with a different CPA regarding our taxes and this CPA offered a simpler solution that did not require additional forms and costs. Most importantly, this other CPA recommended a tax credit that Charlie never mentioned. I questioned Charlie on why he did not mention the tax credit, he stated "oh, yah, I would have done that". We took our business to the other accountant and Charlie curtly expressed his opinion when we told him we were making a change and did not return our entire retainer fee.
