I would never go back...

We had been given a special 2-week trial certificate to Merritt in Towson, so my husband and I decided to try them out. Upon arriving there, it took about 30 minutes to be attended to. When a membership sales lady finally came to us, she gave us the impression that she was NOT eager to have us join as members. The rest of the staff had the same impression. We did come back the remaining of the first week and their impressions never changed. Therefore, we did not return for the 2nd week and decided to explore another gym, Brick Bodies in Perry Hall. We were given a totally different reception there and one year later, we are active members at the gym still. I can't help but wonder if race was an issue at Merritt. (My husband and I are an interracial couple) I guess we will never know, yet I don't care to return to find out either.

PROS: it does have lots of exercise equipment and is larger than most gyms.
CONS: the staff was not courteous at all.

Better off doing jumping jacks in your basement...

Equipment is old and out-dated. Facilities are sub-par. Employees aren't helpful. Theft is a problem in their locker rooms. Layout is terrible (try getting past the racketball players....it's a disaster).

Beware of Merritt Athletic Club

BEWARE of Merritt Athletic Club!!!!

Support and facilities at Merritt are okay for a gym, but on-site staff is not able to address all billing concerns. They are hamstrung from doing things like printing out invoices (though I was able to get mine, they told me that I should have to get it through accounting).

When it came time to cancel my membership (I have to travel more for work, and can't use my membership), I was informed that I didn't resign my membership in the 10 days per my contract and would be billed an extra month (that I can't use). Since I joined on the 9th, 18 months prior, I figured it had to be 10 days prior to the 9th. It turns out, they adjust your billing date to the first of the month. I believe the new membership contracts make that 30 days prior, rather than 10.

With all of the reputable athletic clubs around, I'd think very hard before sigining a contract with Merritt. Find one that values you as a customer, rather than a statistic in a big b
