Spanish Immersion Choice program

The Spanish Immersion program is a hidden jewel in the PAUSD. One of the choice programs offered in K-8 grades. K-5 is fully immersed program. Demand for this program has grown over the years. Typically over 100 enter lottery for a less than 40 slots (minus sibling priority). This year the number was just increased to 40 from 30 which was a long time coming 10 years plus. But, so needed to balance out the classrooms to accomodate 20/class max and eliminate mixed grade classrooms.

Giving the gift of real practical fluency in both speaking and reading literacy and writing something that is priceless. This program opens the minds of families and student in cultural and racial diversity which is unique when you have a mirage of ethnicities all bound by a language that is most likely NOT their native language. For those whose families are native speakers, it gives them a chance to share their heritage.

PROS: part of the public school system
CONS: too few slots to meet demand
